For anyone who is confused by this post - this is an update on the Silver Snitch. There have been question as to the future of the site, and here is the message which was posted to the Silver Snitch lj account. I am merely relaying the message, nothing more. Please, if you have any questions, post them to the link provided.

The Silver Snitch.
Currently, The Silver Snitch is down. I don't know how soon we can get it back up and running, but I do have some very lovely people trying to help me do just that.

I know it's been quite a while since I posted, but I've had things going on that prevented me from being fully involved in the day to day running of the archive. And since I was the only one, it was doubly hard. With no donations coming in and my own bills to pay, I couldn't afford to keep it going by myself. If I hadn't gotten the help offered to me by the amazing people who are now helping me out, this post would have sounded very different.

After all the emails and messages I had gotten from people, some nice and some just downright rude and threatening, I was very close to closing TSS forever. Most people who go to these archives just don't understand the money that goes into keeping them running. The people running the sites shouldn't be expected to foot the bill by themselves, or at all to be honest. We work for free. We don't make a profit. We keep the sites up and running and fix the bugs and all the other problems. We kick people off and ban them and stop plagiarism and add new characters. We help authors when they need it and some archives offer beta reading services.

We get paid for none of this.

So it's not too hard to understand why we ask for donations, right? A lot of archives now have implemented ads to pay for server and domain costs because the donations just aren't enough. I know it can be irritating, but it's necessary.

That is now what TSS is going to have to do. We have received three donations in the past two years, totaling $55. One of those was recent because of a plea by the admin of The Adult FanFiction Archive. The others were in December and September of 2010. I could go further back, but why bother? I do know that there hadn't been any as far back as October 2009.

I know not all of you can donate and I don't expect all of you to do so. Not everyone is old enough to have a job or a bank account (and seriously, you guys shouldn't be on the site anyway because there's adult content), and some people who are old enough just don't have the extra money. I get that. But if you can't afford it, what makes you think I can?

So here's what we're going to do. If you want to contact me, email me at thesilversnitch@ymail.com or the.silver.snitch@gmail.com DO NOT email thesilversnitch@yahoo.com or thesilversnitch@gmail.com I do NOT have access to these accounts and therefore I consider them to be owned by someone who isn't associated with TSS.

Donations are always welcome. If you would like to donate to TSS, click on the link --> https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=H9GSH65W4W9UY (or copy and paste it into the address bar)

It will take you to a donation page where you can input your desired donation amount. You can then sign into your PayPal account (if you have one) or pay with a credit or debit card. You are not REQUIRED to donate, but every little bit helps. So if you can and are willing, please do so as soon as possible.

I'm in the process of getting the domain figured out and the good people at slashcity are being very helpful, so hopefully, with the help offered and accepted, we'll be able to get TSS up and running again asap. Until then, please be patient.

Thank you!

Deirdra

I'm newish to the whole world of slash, and didn't realise that I could donate to the running of the site, it is such a wonderful resource and I will pop by later.

I've often wondered if there wasn't anything I could do to help, and I'm sure I can't be the only one, so do you know if any other sites have the same way of funding themselves (eg a convenient pay pal account one can use)?

I could fill the page with thank yous for all the wonderful work you and people like you do for this community, but that would just be spamming your inbox, so please imagine the one below multiplied indefinitely!

THANK YOU! ...

Hi lygtemanden,

I'm quite sure that Walking the Plank http://www.walkingtheplank.org/archive/index.php and HP Fandom http://hpfandom.net/eff/ also accept kind donations. No pressure, of course.

Thanks for asking and thank YOU!

I'm sure every little bit helps!

I'm currently a barely working full-time student, otherwise I'd be throwing money at Diedre too.

Thanks spike!

I hear ya, I just can't afford to send anything myself at the moment. I'm only working about 10 hours a week, and school sucks all of it.

You rock for sending what you can!

what would be an appropriate amount? You guys say you've made small donations, but I don't know if that means $2 or $20.

I can donate, but I don't want to be like that ridiculous over-donater (donating is great, but you know) or that one who donated a why-bother amount.

I probably think about it too much :/

Literally any amount is appropriate. I once sent $5.00 to a site, because that's all I could fit on my credit card! (I'd maxed it out paying for a move across the country)

So, literally, anything is welcome. It all adds up!

Thanks for asking!

Ok great :) I love TSS so it'd be criminal not to help out when I can afford to, especially during the current financial situation in north america - must be especially difficult for them now (well, obviously...)

But yeah, anything to help. I've donated :)

Yep! There sure is!

Ok, so your avatar always catches my eye. Is it a vine, or a snake? I just can't decide!

It's a snake, locally called a horsewhip snake, I photoshopped it a bit for the Slytherin colours :)

Is it inappropriate to ask or say how much exactly does it cost to run it?

I think it's a very appropriate question, dwarf!

I recommend posting the question on the snitch's LJ page. You'll find a link to it at the top of the post.

I have to admit i really didnt appreciate how much work goes on behind the scenes of the archive and never gave any thought to how much it cost to run. Will donate, as i have enjoyed the archive since the start, as soon as i get paid. Thanks for bringing all this to my attention :D you guys do an absolutely brilliant job here and on the various archive sites.

Well, to be fair, Diedre does say in her post that she will be placing advertisements on her site, and as such, it might be enough to see her through.

I don't know. I literally don't have any further information than the original post I copied and pasted from the snitch's LJ page.

But suffice to say, most things in fandom are a lot of work! And thanks for your lovely words!

I think that's a valid question. Why don't you post this on the actual thread and ask Diedre? With the word spreading like wildfire, who knows how much has been donated.

I think I've confused people somewhat, because they think I'm actively soliciting on Diedre's behalf, which I'm not. Copying and pasting her message, along with the link to the Snitch's LJ account was merely a "here's some info about the Snitch", because people were concerned with it's sudden disappearance. This posted answered some of the questions they had.

So I do highly recommend you post your question over on the Silver Snitch LJ page, where Diedre will be sure to see it. Like I said earlier, it's a valid question.

That might be a question best asked on the original silver snitch lj page. You'll find the link at the very top of the message.

I was merely copying the message to give people a heads up about the status of the Silver Snitch, because there had been a few comments posted here.

You might want to be more clear. From reading, I assumed you WERE Diedra, having a label of "magic helmet" does say that can't be your name. Your message doesn't specify that you are posting on behalf of someone else.

I think it's a bit of a stretch mistaking my handle with jess_the_bytch, who posted the original message, which I linked to.

Deirdra mentioned Slash City and they are a hosting/domain site. That may give people an idea as to how much it will cost.
