Hello, dear members of Snarryficfind,

I just wanted to give you a heads-up that Telanu has contacted Walking the Plank to ask that her Snape/Harry stories be removed from the archive. They've already been deleted from AO3, but she has very kindly agreed to hold off for a week before taking them off WtP so that anyone who wants copies can save them for private use only. After the week is up, she doesn't want them re-posted in any way, shape, or form, whether anonymously or with her name attached. But she does understand that many of us love her work, and she has fond memories of Snarry fandom and wishes us well, so we have a short grace period.

The Tea Series and all her other Snarry fic are classics of the pairing, and I feel personally grateful that they didn't simply disappear without a word. However, you have until midnight Pacific time on April 9th to download copies before they're permanently removed from the internet, so get cracking!

I do hope Telanu continues to write because she is brilliant at it. In the meantime, consider this fair warning: if you love her work, save a copy!

This is mostly a Tumblr phenomenon, but since fandom at large seems to have relocated to Tumblr, it can be a bit of a shock if you wander over from a Snape-loving corner of LJ.

I scouted around Tumblr for a while trying to decide whether I'd be interested, and repeatedly ran into virulent hatred for Snape and his fans. He's interpreted now as an unhygienic stalker and a Nice Guy (fedora version) who obsessed over Lily and wouldn't leave her alone. Nothing he does after her death makes him redeemable, and his bullying of his students means that if you like the character, you endorse RL abuse. It apparently also means you're just fine with men who expect women to have sex with them because they're "friends," and you support men who stalk and even kill women. (Please don't ask me what this has to do with Snape.)

According to this mentality, Snape/Harry is equivalent to pedophilia. The existence of chan in Snarry fandom proves that the fans are borderline pedophiles who simply haven't acted on their impulses yet. By shipping Snarry, you are creating an unsafe fannish environment for CSA victims. And so on.

I don't save links to things that upset me, and I admit I backed away and didn't engage. But I was definitely put off by the buzzword headcanons, the widespread backlash, the emotional projection that falsified Snape's character arc and his childhood friendship with Lily, and the vocal contempt for his fans. I also felt the anti-Snarry sentiment was a rather alarming extension of ye olde ship wars, although I don't know which ship the Snape-haters were defending. James/Lily, perhaps. I'm not going to put myself in a position where I might have to defend myself against charges of pedophilia, because treating it as something substantive enough to deserve a fair argument is already giving the issue more authority than it deserves. And because I would feel so betrayed and furious I would probably have to leave fandom.

Which sounds rather like what must have happened in Sherlock fandom. I did hear rumors of a fic writer being doxxed, which distressed me. I don't know. Fandom on Tumblr seems to be going through a weirdly repressive cycle right now. I realize other parts of it must still have the exuberant, YKINMK sort of atmosphere I enjoyed in HP, but there's too much denunciation and personal hatred around Snape for me to be comfortable.

(Oops, sorry for the tl;dr!)

Good lord, that sounds ugly. I'm glad now I haven't had the time to explore Tumblr.

I've seen this sort of weird repressive attitude in a number of non-fandom places over the last couple of years and have had to pull back from several blogs and forums I used to follow. There's something nasty going on in the whole culture from what I can see. I'm sorry to learn it's infesting fandom to the point of driving writers into withdrawal.

It was very … unwelcoming. Of course, I went looking specifically for Snape-related posts. Other fannish topics may not be quite so contentious, but - well, I'll stick to journal fandom. It suits me better anyway because I like conversation.

I made the mistake of looking under the #Snarry hashtag on Twitter once. It shocked me at the amount of vitriol and Snape-hating that was there. I never looked again. We're very lucky to have placed like this and Snape_Potter on LJ. Safe placed to write and read Snarry, of any type :)

A couple of times I've been tempted to take my fics down too, but I know how much some people love to read them, so they are staying for now. And I know how I feel when I'm looking for a lost one and it doesn't exist anymore.

No apologies needed, please! On the contrary, thank you for the thorough answer. Yes, this appears to be essentially the same wank as in Sherlock last year, whether or not with the same players. The rumor of a writer being doxxed is true; she and others were threatened with being "exposed" as pedophiles, needless to say in the absence of any shred of evidence. Artists who depicted John and Sherlock as young, or as young-looking, were also targeted. It was hideous and the fandom has really never recovered: many creators who'd been there from the beginning left and have not returned.

I'm going to be ageist and say it: Tumblr is full of very young people with little experience of the world, little capacity for critical thinking, minimal skills at evaluating evidence (the rubbish "information" that comes across my dash and that a half-minute Google search could debunk ... !), and an immense capacity for indignation. The interface makes conversation almost impossible. Consequently it's an angry, poisonous, lynch-mobbish place, and one has to be very careful about who one follows if one isn't to be inundated with vitriol.

See? tl;dr backatcha. :^)

Fascinating and rather depressing, though I'm sadly not that surprised for a variety of reasons.

Thanks for the explanation, PI.

Hi, had to dig up this old account because I wanted to reply to you. First of all, I'm very happy you're still around! All the good authors (I'm very picky!) seemed to have gone away and stopped writing and now I'm reading about them pulling out their ffs even. It's terrible.

It's shocking to hear how much influence tumblr has over the fandom. As a long time subscriber of https://www.reddit.com/r/TumblrInAction/ (don't know if you're familiar with reddit, but check it out for a laugh) I can't even begin to understand how that came to be. The mind boggles.

Don't let those people bully you out of something you love.
